This was the first time we have ever seen a double rainbow like this in France. It was stunning but what was even more interesting was the color of the sky -it turned grey to gold in a matter of minutes.

Pont En Royans, a Village in Vercors, France

Pont en Royans is a quaint, cliff-hanging village near the Choranche Caverns. The colorful houses hanging over the local river are perfect for photographers and lovers of beauty alike. We stopped there after visiting the Choranche Caverns, walked through the city, and stayed for a great dinner before driving home. See this lovely French village:

This is the second video of the interior of the Choranche Caverns near Grenoble in the French Alps. This video is specifically of the ‘Cathedral room’ where they show a video projected onto the cavern walls. The video depicts the history of the caverns. It’s fun to watch but a bit too techy for the setting.

We’re back in France now and back to the French videos. We arrived just in time for a record cold front, bringing temperatures as low as minus 21 degrees – yes, that’s 21 degrees below freezing! My husband, who has lived here for 18 years, says he’s never seen temperatures this low. Lucky us! NOT!

Anyway, back to happier moments in France…. About an hour up a mountain outside of Grenoble in the Vercors region of the French Alps is the Choranche Cavern. The Caverns have been inhabited by humans for thousands of years and they have the artifacts to prove it. While the history was interesting, the actual beauty and serenity of the caverns are what impressed me. Filled with shimmering stalagmites, crystal blue-green lakes and streams, shiny limestone and strange eyeless creatures, the caverns are a magical Neverland. If you get to the region, I recommend taking a morning or afternoon to visit them. Then head over to the cliff-hanging village of Pont En Royans for lunch or dinner (video to come).

Sanibel Island Beach: a Florida Island Paradise

Sanibel Island is a lovely island in the Gulf of Mexico, just off the mainland of the city of Fort Myers, Florida. It’s pristine and will remain that way due to very strict building and conservation regulations. The Ding Darling Bird Refuge is on Sanibel too and brings in the lovely tropical and beach birds from all over the region. We took a walk on the main beach, visited the Lighthouse and the Pier, and took video and photos of the birds, including an Osprey Nest with a baby.

My next post will be our last from Florida, as we head back to the French Alps in the dead of winter. What a difference that will be!

Fort Myers Beach, Florida Sand Sculpting World Championship

One of my final videos of Florida before returning to France is of the Sand Sculpting Competition at Fort Myers Beach. The Beach had its first World Championship Sand Sculpting Competition this year. It was chosen because it is one of the few beaches in the world that has the ‘correct’ sand to do the sculptures. It was astonishing to see the skill and patience required to create these gorgeous sculptures. It took them several days to complete them. See some of the best, including the winners of the competition.

Music Festival in Fort Myers, Florida

Every month throughout the year, Fort Myers has a Music Fest in the downtown area. Granted, it’s not like the Fete de la Musique in the towns of France, but it was fun just the same. Fort Myers today is nothing like the Fort Myers I grew up in 50 years ago. It’s almost unrecognizable (thank goodness – it was pretty much farmers and crackers 50 years ago. Salt of the earth folk, but no one I had much in common with). Today it’s very international and even metropolitan in its feel. A sure sign of civilization is when Trader Joe’s opened its first Florida store in Naples, a sister city to Fort Myers. Yippee!
