Sounds like a wonderful trip and Ireland has always been a favorite of min. The price you paid for 2 people was unbelievably low and of course coming from the west coast of the USA would be a lot higher. All your research into the other areas really paid off! Good for you and the time you spent with your 'ancestry'.

I'm so sorry about your sister. You gave her a beautiful tribute and she was lucky to have such a grateful sister that thought so highly of her.

Thanks, Linda, for your post. You have been on the other end of things watching your husband face the same unemployment, loneliness, isolation, financial worries as many expats do. And you are right that the best thing to do is find a way to spend a few months somewhere to test the waters and do serious research before making the move to another country. Thanks for sharing. Cynthia

Outstanding posting!!! I feel for EVERYONE who moves to another country, whatever the motivating reason and tries to 'make it'. My husband is in that situation coming here to America and it's an impossible situation, especially in these economic times. As for me trying to live in another country and 'make it', I learned long ago that it wasn't going to happen for me and I have University degrees, 30 years+ experience in several different fields speak 3 languages and have a God-given ability to learn languages fairly easily. I tried first by volunteering/working for 3 months in each of those countries to get a feel for the possibilities and this was in much better economic times in the 90's through 2005 and for a woman who needs to earn a living, it is almost impossible. Cynthia and the others who read your blog - look how long it took Mickey (above) KUDOS Mickey for your perserverence. Most of us cannot wait 7 years for this to happen. Sometimes, we have to give up our dreams and think more reality based. I personally would say - never give up your home and your life wherever you are living and instead look for a way to and try to live a part-time life in another country.

Thanks for your comment. Thank you for pointing out that even the French are having a difficult time getting decent work. I have seen that myself too. I know leaving France isn't the first choice of French people since the ties are deep here so I feel for you. Good luck with your career. Cynthia
